FO: Flutter of the Wings

This was my first shawl pattern in crescent shape without short rows. I know some people love crescent shape, and yet they feel hesitant to do short rows. So, this time I tried to design without one.

I made 3 samples for this pattern. The first one I made was using Rendezvous Cashmere Lace in Evil Stepsister (purple). Since this is a trial. I made the shawl only using 1 skein (200 yards / 50 gram) and without beads. Although it was only 50 gram skein, but it turned out quite a decent size and I really like how the shawl looked.

So, here the first Flutter of the Wings sample look like:

Pattern: Flutter of the Wings (Lace Weight - 4 Repeats)
Materials: Rendezvous Cashmere Lace 100% Cashmere (Evil Stepsister colorway)
Quantity: 1 skein (50g, 400 yards / skein)
Needles: 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle
Start Date: 16 July 2013
Finish Date: 28 July 2013
Finished Size on Blocking Board: : 110 cm (43.3") across top edge, 43 cm (16.9") depth.

Next, I knitted the DK weight version, because I have the same yarn in DK weight and I really wanted to know how it looks like in DK weight. This time I did the smallest size (3 Repeats) because I wanted to use only 2 skeins of DK weight. Also, I used beads. Before blocking, your hardly saw the beads on the right side, but you can clearly saw them on the wrong side. I tried several possible placement to make it more visible on the right side, but no luck. So, I just hoped that after blocking it would be more visible.

Pattern: Flutter of the Wings (DK Weight - 3 Repeats)
Materials: Rendezvous Cashmere DK 100% Cashmere (Rossetta colorway)
Quantity: 2 skeins (50g, 200 yards / skein)
Needles: 4.0 mm (US 6) circular needle
Start Date: 25 August 2013
Finish Date: 28 August 2013
Finished Size on Blocking Board: : 110 cm (43.3") across top edge, 43 cm (16.9") depth.

As you can see above photos, the beads were more visible after blocking. It turned out the same size as the lace weight, and as pretty as the lace weight. I decided that 2 samples should be enough to showcase the result of this pattern and move on to new design. However, after I published the first clue and saw the spoiler of other people, I had the urge to make another one, and this time I made bigger size using lace weight yarn.

At first I planned to put beads, however, the hole of size 8 beads was too small for the 0.75 mm hook that I had. So, I decided not to use beads. I knitted until second clue, until I saw other people's result with beads in the spoiler thread. I was such in dilemma. Should I bought smaller hook and starting over, or should I continue without beads. I was not afraid of frogging. I just did not want to stop knitting while waiting for my new hook to arrive (yes, I ordered smaller hook online). In the end, my mother in law had a small hook that I wanted, so I borrowed it from her. I restarted my shawl with beads and I was a happy camper.

Pattern: Flutter of the Wings (Lace Weight - 7 Repeats)
Materials: Rendezvous Cashmere Lace 100% Cashmere (Fawn colorway)
Quantity: 2 skeins (50g, 400 yards / skein)
Needles: 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle
Start Date: 25 August 2013
Finish Date: 28 August 2013
Finished Size on Blocking Board: : 164 cm (64.6") across top edge, 58 cm (22.8") depth.

About the cashmere yarn, it is really soft and heaven to knit with. I really was enjoying knitting with it. The only problem with cashmere yarn is that they are very easy to break. During frogging, you really need to be careful not to snag the yarn. I didn't have a problem during blocking, though.

I read somewhere that cashmere yarn use the fur on the neck or under belly part, which is very soft but it is also very short. That is why it is easy to break.

“Look at me!” The peacocks shout, then they fan their feathers out.
Their feathers reach up to the sky, each one has a big, dark eye.
“Look at me!” The peacocks shout, then they fan their feathers out.

Proud as a Peacock is a deep triangular shawl that can be made with only one skein of lace yarn. This shawl is crocheted from the neck down, and can be adjusted very easily depending on the amount of yarn you have. As with all my other patterns, this pattern comes with row-by-row written direction in US crochet term and charts

Technical Editor: Chaitanya Muralidhara

Yarn:
I used Rendezvous Silky Lace 50% Merino wool/50% Silk.

For medium shawl, I used Emerald colorway 2 skeins (200 g, 1600 yards).

Note:
Option 1 and option 2 require the same number of beads, but for option 1, you use larger beads on the last row.
Option 3 uses beads on last row only (you can use size 6 or 8).

Hook: 3.5 mm (E) (adjust hook size accordingly if you use thicker yarn).

Notion: Removable stitch markers, size 6 and 8 beads (optional, see table).

Level: Intermediate

Gauge (after blocking):
After the first 9 rows, will give you 28 cm (11”) wingspan and 13 cm (5.1”) depth.
Every repeat of rows 10 - 15 adds 5.5 cm (2.2”).

Finished Size:
Small: 176 cm (69.3") across top edge, 84 cm (33.1") depth.

FO: Proud as a Peacock

I designed this shawl a long time ago (about 2 years ago). If I remember correctly, I designed this after I designed Cassandra. I was in China that time and the weather was starting to get cold. I whipped up rectangular shawl using worsted weight yarn. When it's done, I was thinking that it would look lovely in triangle shape. So, I quickly drew a chart first before I forgot about it. After the chart was done, I was trying to crochet the newly designed shawl using the existing yarn I had. After the first 20 rows or so, I didn't really like the result. Not sure it was because the pattern, the yarn or my mood. So, I stopped and put it aside. Furthermore, another idea came out, so I had to chase after the new idea before it got lost (it became Remember Me).

Last year, I tried to make the shawl again using light fingering weight yarn, and once again after the first 20 rows or so, I didn't like the result. So, I stopped and designed Laura instead. Only last April, when I got lace weight yarn sample, I decided to have another go. This time, after the first few rows, I immediately fell in love and really enjoyed making it.

Here is my first sample made using only 1 skein of lace weight yarn. Surprisingly, the finished result is quite large.

Pattern: Proud as a Peacock (Small)
Materials: Rendezvous Silky Lace 50% Merino Superwash/50% Silk (Sleeping Beauty colorway)
Quantity: 1 skein (100g, 800 yards)
Hook: 3.5 mm (E)
Start Date: 20 April 2013
Finish Date: 28 April 2013
Finished Size on Blocking Board: : 176 cm (69.3") across top edge, 84 cm (33.1") depth

I love the result and decided to do the larger size with beads. I had difficult time to decide the placement of the beads. Once I decided, crocheting was a breeze.
Here is the result of medium size shawl with beads:

Pattern: Proud as a Peacock (Medium)
Materials: Rendezvous Silky Lace 50% Merino Superwash/50% Silk (Emerald colorway)
Quantity: 2 skein (200g, 1600 yards)
Beads: Toho Size 8 Seed Beads Dark Peridot Sil/Lined Frosted
Hook: 3.5 mm (E)
Start Date: 22 July 2013
Finish Date: 3 August 2013
Finished Size on Blocking Board: 226 cm (89") across top edge, 107 cm (42.1") depth

When the MCAL started, I could could resist to start another one. I wanted to know how light colorway looks like in this pattern. So, this time, I used light pink/purple colorway. I also did a slight modification, and stop PART A after I used only 30% of the yarn instead of using 45%. This way, I can repeat PART B one more time as per the medium and large pattern. I also only added size 6 beads on the last row instead of picot because I almost run out of yarn.
Here is the result:

Pattern: Proud as a Peacock (Small)
Materials: Rendezvous Silky Lace 50% Merino Superwash/50% Silk (Whisper colorway)
Beads: Toho SIZE 6 Seed Beads Light Topaz Silver Lined
Quantity: 1 skein (100g, 800 yards)
Hook: 3.5 mm (E)
Start Date: 17 June 2013
Finish Date: 28 june 2013
Finished Size on Blocking Board: : 226 cm (89") across top edge, 107 cm (42.1") depth
